Built in 2005, Key Route Lofts stands as a modern tribute to the East Bay's most legendary transportation network: the Key System. Long before BART tunneled under the bay, the Key System's electric streetcars ruled the region. The exact site where the lofts now stand, at Adeline Street and Yerba Buena Avenue, was once home to "Tower 3," one of the busiest junctions of this vast 66-mile rail network. For decades, a lone operator sat in this tower orchestrating a chaotic ballet of transbay trains shuttling thousands of commuters between Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville, and the ferry piers. While the roar of the streetcars faded in the 1950s when the Key System was dismantled in favor of buses and cars, the site was reborn at the start of the 21st century. Today Key Route Lofts feature contemporary, airy live/work spaces that honor this transit history in both name and spirit, anchoring a corner that once kept the entire East Bay moving.
Commuters on the old network used to describe the sometimes rickety, rocking motion of the streetcars with the popular local phrase, "Swing and sway the Key System way."
