Built in 1944 at the height of World War II, the industrial site that is now the Oliver Lofts was originally a critical manufacturing plant for the Oliver Tire & Rubber Company. As Axis powers choked off the world's supply of natural rubber, Oliver chemists collaborated with the U.S. government to develop vital synthetic rubber materials that kept Allied forces moving. After decades of production along the Emeryville rail spur, the factory's run ended and the company relocated its headquarters out of the Bay Area. The historic site was saved from demolition and reimagined in 2002 by NHP Architects. Today the converted concrete-and-steel building features 50 modern lofts that honor their rugged past with soaring ceilings, industrial-scale windows, and original details like the factory's old freight elevator.
Oliver Tire & Rubber, founded by Marion F. Oliver in Oakland in 1912, is credited with inventing the modern vulcanization process (hardening natural rubber) and was America's first retread rubber brand.
