Rising 318 feet above the shoreline, Pacific Park Plaza pierced the Emeryville sky when it was completed in 1984. Designed with a distinctive three-winged "Y-shape," this 30-story tower wasn't just built to offer breathtaking bay views, it was engineered to tame the shifting earth beneath it. Erected on challenging layers of soft, black "Bay mud," the massive structure was anchored by deep friction pilings and a formidable five-foot-thick reinforced concrete mat. When the devastating 7.1 magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake struck in 1989, the high-rise didn't just survive; it danced, gracefully absorbing the violent shaking. Because it had been wired with seismic sensors a few years earlier, the tower became an accidental laboratory, giving scientists an unprecedented, real-time look at how modern skyscrapers can ride out the fury of nature.
Despite its structural brilliance, the original exterior didn't fare as well against the rain. Many original owners remember that immediately after completion the building developed major water infiltration along its panel joints. It had to be entirely re-clad with a cream-colored porcelain metal panel system, installed right over the existing facade to stop the leaking.
