One of the towns that joined Oakland in the 1870s, on the flats between Lake Merritt and the estuary, with a deep stock of Victorian and early-1900s homes on tight lots, many now split into flats. East 18th and International Boulevard supply the everyday restaurants and markets, and the lake's south shore, Lake Merritt BART, and the shoreline are a short walk.
